Bailarín, coreógrafo y violinista francés. Estudió con su padre, maestro de ballet, y realizó extensas giras por toda Europa (1838–59), en las que a menudo tocaba el violín mientras bailaba. Fue maestro de ballet del Teatro Imperial de San Petersburgo (1859–69). Su obra
El caballito jorobado (1864) fue el primer ballet basado en temas folclóricos rusos. En 1870 pasó a ser maestro de ballet de la Ópera de París, donde compuso la coreografía de su ballet más famoso,
Coppélia. Creó uno de los primeros sistemas de
notación coreográfica, publicado en 1852.
